Jerky Treats for Dogs

Jerky treats for dogs are not necessary for your pet’s balanced diet. These treats are intended to be given to dogs only occasionally — and in small quantities.

We strongly advise pet owners to stop giving these treats to your pets immediately. If jerky treats are something you do give to your pet, it is important to regularly monitor your pet closely for any or all of the following signs that may occur within hours to days of your pet ingesting the jerky treats:

  • Decreased appetite
  • Decreased activity
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea (sometimes with blood)
  • Increased water consumption
  • Increased urination

Blood tests may indicate kidney failure and urine tests may show Fanconi syndrome (increased blood sugar) if your pet is experiencing any of the above symptoms due to jerky ingestion. Although most dogs are likely to recover, over 600 deaths have been reported. The dogs that have died passed quickly so do not wait to see a vet if you notice any of the above symptoms.
